What are immune system disorders?

An immune system disorder is a condition where the immune system, which is responsible for protecting the body against infections and diseases, does not function properly. There are two main types of immune system disorders:

  1. Immunodeficiency disorders: These are conditions where the immune system is weakened or absent, making it difficult for the body to fight off infections. Examples include HIV/AIDS, severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID).
  2. Autoimmune disorders: These are conditions where the immune system attacks the body’s own cells and tissues, mistaking them for foreign invaders. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis.

There are also other immune system disorders that do not fit into either of these categories, such as allergies and hypersensitivity reactions.

Symptoms  can vary widely depending on the specific condition and the severity of the disorder. Some common symptoms may include recurrent infections, fatigue, fever, inflammation, pain, and swelling.

Treatment may involve medications to suppress the immune system in the case of autoimmune disorders, or medications to boost the immune system in the case of immunodeficiency disorders. In some cases, lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and exercise may also be recommended to support the immune system.
